BioBlitz

A BioBlitz is a day-long occasion where groups of volunteer scientists, families, students, educators, and community members collaborate to discover and classify a wide array of plants, animals, fungi, and various other organisms within a 24-hour timeframe. Our first BioBlitz was carried out in June 2923 and provides a yardstick to measure future progress.

Jubilee Meadow - Bio Blitz

The BioBlitz which we carried out with the help of Gemma Walker and her team at NWT has given us a good base load and insight into what species we have on the field as we start on the big adventure to turn it into a mor biodiverse environment and Wildflower Meadow. Below is a summary of what we found.

2024 is the first summer after the planting of seeds the previous winter. The
10- metre wide strip running parallel to the main road is a great success, with a profusion of poppies, cornflowers, ox-eye daisies and other species providing a splash of colour to be enjoyed by walkers of the permissive path.
The, much larger area, planted with perennials, looks, to all intent and purposes, just like grassland, but our wildllower expert, Ed Cross, visited us recently and found loads of different species growing underneath the grass. The expectation is that the perennials will eventually push their way through and out compete the grasses. We need to be patient, not always easy, as this could take up to five years from the time of planting. The good news is that Ed is delighted with the progress so far, so fingers crossed!
