What a fantastic first year for the Jubilee Meadow Project! Thanks to all those who have supported us, from the Parish Council and BagLadies, to those organisations who have given us grants, to the general public who have backed everything, from the next box schemes, to the memorial benches, and on to the memorial trees. The enthusiasm for the Meadow Project has been a wonderful encouragement to the team. Thank you!
We got the seeds planted! In spite of everything the weather threw at us, and thanks to some creative ingenuity on the part of our Consultant, Ed Cross, the seeds, both annual and perennial, were finally sown at the end of November. A relief to us all!
All 12 memorial benches and plaques are now in place, and firmly secured, thanks to the efforts of Tony McGinn and his team.
Three picnic tables have been ordered and will be in place early next year. These are from the same supplier and same recycled material as the benches, and so will blend in well.
In December we planted more whips which we sourced from NCC at a subsidised price. These will reinforce any gaps in the hedging.
We have ordered 25 trees from Barcham Trees, a major nursery based just outside Ely. These should be delivered and planted in February and will form a one-acre memorial area at the south west side of the field. A further 15 trees will be ordered and planted in November 2024. We are doing the tree planting in two stages so we can give the wildflower seeds the best chance to get established with the minimum disturbance.
